Gold Coin

the gold coin
falls through fingers of yearning
bmw’s and suv’s of societies ideals
cell phones attached to ears
can only surgically be removed
and I wonder if it’s true
that you shouldn’t pump gas on a cell
if
a spark could cause explosion
and create a hole the size of texas
the size of the black void I see
when designer clothes are all there is
when goodwill offers exceed
target prices
when no one passes the offering plate
and I daze in wonder at the
insanity of it all
I gave my last dollar
the last
there was no more none for the mcDs dollar menu
none for milk and bread and cheezits
none not one
and I wasn’t afraid
because there was change to be counted
bottoms of old purses
handed to me from a life of squalor
caked in gunk of yesterday
filtered into the change counter at the store
laughing it off as normal
taking the 5 ones and tucking it in my fear of
how many days left till payday
how what will the children think
a quarter of a tank goes fast on empty
and it was always enough
I always got where I was going
wendys next to walmart
prunetucky next to you
always enough to say that’s all there is
there is no more
the lights are on and there’s beans on the back burner
and life isn’t what it was
and I’m glad for that
and I see that only I see
down the drain loser smile I
and I put a bow on the fear
and give it to God a present
and he’s not surprised nor angry
but glad because the lesson is learned
the struggle is over
the fight finished
the gold coin flies in the air and I watch
for heads or tails turning and turning
this way and that a flash is all
a pretty flash
and the flower man stopped coming
because they never really made me happy
anyways

Josie,

When I read your work, I find it difficult to find adequate words. So much of what you write moves me within. This is incredible. Thank you!

Josie, very sad and very well written. Remember there is always two sides to a coin so the odds are even.
