You start noticing this at a certain point in your life...

And once
as remote
as that flickering
ghost of a light
across a wide swath
of a barren
twig-twisted field.
Now as close
as the humid cloud
of my hot breath--
They
drop one by one.
Those stolid
unmoveable icons of my past-
fathers,
mothers,
even sons.
And now
it is time to ask
how long will that distant light
last.
