The Family Picture It has a smell of decay. Dog-eared, curled sepia-tinted fringes. A moth-eaten family rigidly positioned a hierarchy of rows. Perhaps a maiden aunt her face a dour, downturned affair relegated to the back. And the two boys-- one looks defiantly at the camera while the other ponders the ground, their vision already in a cast all framed with barren winter branches nothing will last.

A great write indeed, I often find myself browsing through old photographs and wondering, especially the photos that were taken when my mom was young, I wonder what the people were thinking, what was going on at the time the picture was taken...a single picture says a million or more things to those who view it, if they view it carefully.

Amazing write, Doug. I love looking at the old photos and wondering what life must have been like back then. After the stillness of the photo life went on as usual. Life was much harder back then. Thanks for sharing this excellent poetry with us.
