Reduced to Numbers

This is not me,

I am the lithe girl in braids,

I can run like a deer,

And leap onto the back of a sixteen-hand horse.

This cannot possibly be me,

I am strong as an ox,

Can swim across “Halls Pond”,

And can do the work of a man.

This cannot be me,

But, alas here I sit,

Over fifty with aches and pains,

And a not-so-lithe hitch in my step.

Indeed here I sit,

In a doctor’s office with tests to be done,

Numbers on a chart, and tears on my cheeks,

Tell of the grown up who is now me.

Me, reduced to numbers.

James Taylor sings, “Shower the People”,

Over the music system overhead.

This cannot be. We've never met, yet you write as though you know me. You've stolen my thoughts, repackaged them in a much nicer being and returned them to me. Thank you Dick

You captured well how so many of us feel Karen at our age. I still think with the mind of a forty year old but when I try to act like one my fiftyish body disagrees.

I love the way you have taken us here, Karen... your thought-flow is both lucid and yet very much in streams of unconscious. Beautifully taut in its expressions of emotions and memory. Please be well - stats are ONLY stats and not the real us! Our bodies think and feel and respond... grief can conjure all kinds of bodily responses. You have recently been through much. But, the bottom line is that our body is unique and sings it own song; we have to be in tune with its melodies and listen to how it needs to heal. xx

A most meaningful offering the sentiments of which many will relate to, Karen. Thank you. Love and best wishes to you,

Such a poignant look at aging. Well penned and heart touching. I hope all will be well.

A very creative way to approach the subject of aging! Sad, but light at the same time. We surely need the grace of God for "growing up."

I sure do relate.
I just keep moving- no choice- move right along.
Very well expressed.

I have to smile, Karen, because this is usually the subject of a male poet. I'm quick to admit, I don't like the aging process, but then, most of us old folks have gained a little wisdom along the way. Perhaps that makes up for it -- nah.

Time catches up with us as do health problems but don't let it get you down as your are in the flower of your life in my opinion. Lots of good times ahead. God bless you with better health as you enjoy these years.

Oh, Karen how I can feel this. Time passes and what we feel doesn't coincide with the image in the mirror and we wonder where the time has gone. I so hope this isn't serious.

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
