“Don’t Touch”

I walked into the office and offered him my hand,

He drew back and said, “You need to know,

I don’t like to be touched.”

“Well”, I said, “I understand.”

“Nice to meet you, sir.”

‘Nice to meet you, too.”

So small in stature, his posture rigid,

He is soon seated in my classroom,

And introduces himself to all.

“I am a good reader, and I just got out of ‘Juvie’.”

“My mom dropped me at my grandma’s when I was five,

She never came back, and Dad is in California,

Growin’ his own for medicinal buyers,

I’ll go find him when I am older.

I’ve been to ‘Rainbow Gatherings’,

And lots of parties and raves,

Now I am here ‘Cause grandma is going to jail,

Guess even grannies can’t sell drugs.”

His effort to make light of all this,

Is evident in his sarcastic tone,

But his anger drips from his words,

And over his rigid shoulders.

That same fury hides his blue eyes,

Behind a curtain of hair.

But in spite of his “Don’t touch” bravado,

He sits close to me at lunch,

And gives me a ‘high five’ at the end of the day.

He makes me think of a beautiful young colt, a maverick who will only entrust himself once his faith has been earned. I certainly look forward to hearing of him again, Karen, because you will undoubtedly become his closest ally and have already earned his respect. First things first, but even that high-five at the end of Day One is impressive and says much. Beautifully written. xx

A sad story, indeed, and one that infects society on many levels. The love and understanding you're showing this boy, Karen, is a strong medicine that will help heal his wounds. Drugs and alcohol (abused) ruins everything. I certainly can understand him not wanting to be touched by strangers; I'm the same way; always have been. There has to be understanding, respect, and love before that happens. The 'high fives' are a good start. Keep up the great work with your kids! This write will stay with me all day.
Happy TGing. Peace and blessings ... richard

A high five...a touch of trust indeed...my heart goes out to him, should Never be...children should adventure out, but always know they have a safe island of love, truly sad.

Even grandmas are going to jail these days - so many kids really have it tough these very sad days, and this one is lucky to have found you.
