Written before "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell, but I think it expresses one of his themes quite nicely.

It takes a million practice swings

To get you to the top.

In baseball, tennis, golf or life

The ones who lag or stop

Before they meet their quotas are

The ones who get passed by.

And all their explanations will

Avoid the reason why.

It takes a million well-thought thoughts

To plan your every move,

To visualize your next success

And keep you in the groove.

And when at last you reach the top

Of that steep, winding stair,

It takes a lifetime's discipline

To keep you there.

It takes a million well-thought thoughts
To plan your every move,
To visualize your next success

For sure, you are in the right ball park with one million, particularly with a person like me who is a slower thinker.

You are so correct in this tightly-written little poem. So many people, be it in writing or something else, have lots of excuses why they can't do things, but your poem sets that straight.

Profoundly sound advice...
