I didn't hear the door
Slamming shut so softly
As you run from this lie, from this,
Just another part of our future
Stolen to give you a few giddy moments
As you purchase your happiness
Trading your family for each piece
The shame of it, these years
Of lies, of failure, of misery
Weighed too much and you
Couldn't be bothered to quit adding
Each new dark deed to the balance
Until stoop shouldered and shaking
You could no longer face us
So in the end we paid twice
Once with our money, our security
And twice with our family's future
I can't decide if I am sadder
About this decade of hurts
The valley of thorny selfish pricks
The pools of dark hopelessness
That now live in our little ones eyes
The fact that I stayed by your side
To let you disappoint us again or again
Or the fact that you are making sure
That the day will not come
When you repay what you have taken
Giving happiness when once you gave
Nothing at all
So what remains are these deep gulches
Where you dug out the most fertile
Parts of me, that topsoil of richness
That still knew how to grow flowers
Stealing from those who loved you
The greatest things we had to take
Our hope, our trust, and our love
Making two girls tired, old, and bitter
A lot of emotional release and realistic sadness within your poem...so sad to read when one is fallen away from their relationship of family...

Great to see you post again, yet the contents is sad.
Yet looking at you bio again, n again, I want to feel this is fiction, as no-one is so daft.... Yet the angst pours out.
Weird I trusted a lass in NY for the last four years, she claimed to be miss perfect, never cheats or cheated. I went on another poetry site under another name, and found oud she'd been with some geezer Richard behind my back.... Now I'm life long celibate, I can never trust another woman after so many times of being betrayed...
Such a shame, all that has happened. Keep the faith and look to the future where hope resides. Perhaps them you will find peace and solitude in new adventures....
Be safe,
Karen

I tend to think, that your " topsoil of richness " has survived after all and these written flowers you have planted are blooming quite nicely. A sad write, yes, but what remains is full of tomorrows !
This is my first time reading your poetry. It's beautiful. I love the "door slamming shut so softly" and "topsoil of richness taht still knew how to grow flowers." It's too bad he didn't enjoy that garden, though looks like he didn't mind plucking a bunch of flowers from it anyways. --Charlie
Powerful feelings here! I have been through something very similar to this...it hurts when we are betrayed and even years later, the betrayer cannot find the courage to own up to their thoughtless actions.
"When He Left" depicts the reality of emotions of a sad union that couldn't find togetherness. An outstanding composition poetized to show art and life.
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
