This is a prose on writing. It was something I origianlly entered into a writing challenge.

Prose on Writing

Writing is one of the most creatively genius gifts of God to mankind. It’s more than a tool, more than an instrument of communication, it’s more than art.

Writing is action. It’s a dance that calls to us. It’s that gently whispered invitation at midnight to come through the invisible door of our minds and join the Writer’s Dance, at the Secret Ball. It’s a race for some, against the evils of the age, for others a friendly marathon giving opportunity to show off their literary speed and agility; all happy to cross the finish line and quickly hop on their marks for the next race.

Writing is a place. It is a refuge, a place to feel safe away from the eyes of men. It’s a stronghold or fortified wall built around others where they can plan and strategize their art, entertain their muse, and produce life changing spiritually encouraging words to send out. To some it’s an island, the pen and paper- their instant portal in and out of reality- making an escape in the most stressful of days. For others, it’s an alien land of imaginary circumstances, where the issues of the day are truly honest with no secret motives or hidden agendas. To some, it’s a courtroom where they act as judge bringing justice to criminals and relief for the weary.

Writing is a platform. It acts as a podium where world leaders encourage the nations, religious men challenge humanity, lovers confess their passion for the one they burn for, and the average person of no position or title finds an invisible audience hanging on every word.

Writing is a symbol of freedom. As long as there’s material that can be marked upon and men and women having nubs for which to mark with, the heart and mind and secrets of the soul will find ways to be written. No one can take away our power to scratch out our literary masterpiece.

Writing is the evidence that mankind is searching for the Creator. It’s the fruit of an intelligent race whose written word is a billion different pieces of the same puzzle. A puzzle all united by the common thread of humanity; when put together, says that we’re all created in the image of God.

Writing allows us to touch each other in a special way. It breaks down the walls and barriers that divide us and sets a table for all races to come and fellowship in a multitude of realms, and settings, through out the past, present, and future- both imagined and real.

Writing is timeless. The written word scribbled on a pad of paper today can be read thousands of years later, in other countries, by any man. Today Mariah, the big green, awe inspiriting third moon of the fictional planet Niveah may be gazed upon by Mike Hill, from 976 N. Gow, Wichita Kansas in January of 2007, Tomorrow, Paul McClain may gaze upon that same beautiful moon, from Dublin Ireland in January of 4032.

Writing is a door, a portal, through which we are given an opportunity to peer into eternity. Through writing, God has intimately shared with us the limitless power to create. We are equipped, by this literary wonder, not only to read what has already been written, but write our own stories. We can create worlds with creatures and destinies. We can make a man in our image and make him rise or fall. We can breathe out wondrous planets and galaxies, and turn around and destroy them with an eraser or backspace button.

This gift is no doubt extraordinary. Extraordinary is far too inferior to use to describe. Writing, what ever it is, has been given to us as a free gift from the Author of Creation.

And in the interest of this ancient yet timeless art, and for the integrity that it demands; I charge you- those who carry the pen, pound the typewriter, or tap the keyboard:

Write, write, write! And when you have made it to that last and final period, I hope that you had written it all with passion and fervor, as a fever sicken fool on a mission, driven by the momentum of drunken desire, visions of grandeur, and the wild ideas of daydreamer architects . Write as if you are on fire. Write as if it was the means to catch your next breath. Then, you can look at that last period- and smile, knowing that you had written well.
