From the loneliness of one of my friends, this poem was born when she told me of her relationship with another lost soul. She has suffered from alcoholism for over 30 years, he has Tourettes Syndrome. She asked me to write a poem for them, and this was the result.

Beautiful hearts hide behind jagged minds
warped by fates chance;
the outside world
looking in
sees nothing of value,
and dismisses as worthless
the hidden treasures.

And lonely people
wander through this world
desolate from their aloneness,
weeping at walls,
the silent screams deafening them.

Once, in the smoky gloom of a bar,
two of these wanderers met by chance,
a passing glance
sprinkled fairy dust on torment
and cemented a friendship
to withhold all storms

He, with unchecked emotions made whole
by sustenance of amber,
she, with anger erupting from the midst of her anguish.
Two lost souls in a world that did not understand them.
Precious life raft to each other
in the storms of life.

And, as the years pass,
trusting in each other
they make their way forward,
blossoming in a late Spring
with the perfume of love
gently dancing in the breeze
and making hearts flutter.

Maybe not with the passion of youth
but with an understanding
wrought from life's experiences.
A caring and sharing
of thought and deed,
yet no less important than the heady
delight of a first love.
Just unique in its presence.

This then is my wish for the lonely,
that life shall bring forth a myriad of joy,
enough to soften the shards of pain,
to melt the hardness of erected walls
and enable the joy
to effervesce within.

That a forever end to loneliness endure,
companionship warming heart and
colouring your world,
from the grey of despair.
That two of the lost
who have found each other,
can build completeness together.
