While washing dishes after finishing my breakfast this morning, I saw a few Robins in my back yard. There was no ground-pecking or hopping about as is usually the case with Robins in morning hours. They were sitting quite still in a few of the areas where there was no snow. It moved me to write this "nature" poem in tribute to the much delayed and highly anticipated Spring.

Spring 2014
© J. Joy “Sistah Joy” Matthews Alford

It’s the 3rd day of Spring
But it snowed again yesterday
So robins sit still in my back yard
Perplexed at the mounds of cold white stuff
That seems to block their beaks
From scrumptious worms, bugs
And other earthbound morsels
Delicacies to fill their migration-trimmed bellies

Perplexed, they sit
Perhaps awaiting the stir
Of a hearty or horny earthworm
Or confused bug who peers above
To discover the origin or purpose
Of the cold white stuff
That brings moisture but peril
To the less protected crawlers
Who flee vibrations and their winged foe
That sit still warming themselves in the sun
While patiently waiting for breakfast

Indeed this is nice piece work, J Joy! As yesterday I was quite surprised to see many birds in my back garden too; and then I thought home already!

You captured the scene perfectly. For all their migration, robins seem to know how to weather changes like this quite well. However, when I first moved here 30 years ago, I used to see a lot of migrating robins in the spring. For the past 10 years or so I haven't seen any. Perhaps because of the growing city, their migration route has changed.

They are very cute. I once had a family of robins made a nest just outside of my back window. I saw the little babies being fed daily by the mother, and the daddy just stand around on the wire watching. LOL!!! The mommy did all the work!!

Great poem!
