early summer
red rocks stadium
foothills of colorado rockies
cool night air
the lights of denver
down on the flat
lost a lover to
the open road
it was her sighs
who lingered
traveling songs sung
arlo & pete
singings their stories long
turning music into song
lost in the deep
mountain echoes
just a boy
with nowhere to go
on the run
looking for
while his country loses its
soul
sweet love gone
if only if only
lost
with only music to warm
his dreams
to quiet his screams
to open his heart
only
if walking his
highway blues
Deeply connected to the times and your journey. Recall trying to find shade for my sun and wind scorched face at high noon in Denver on a trip across the country in 1967 in an open MGA roadster with no top. Stopped at a Wyoming restaurant on the way out and they were playing, "If you're going to San Francisco… Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair." We laughed, because we had just come from there. I couldn't connect with the woman at that time either. They were either all to free or encumbered in some way.
I know the area well. There was a crash site near Boulder
at that time for flower children going to or coming from San Francisco. A young lady was walking wearily along the highway
with a rolled up mattress on her back. A handwritten sign was
pinned to the mattress that read: "Massage $5." That image summed up the times for me.
