The Cleaning Lady At The Budget Inn

There is something mysterious
about the cleaning lady
here at the Budget Inn in Statesboro.
I have watched her all week
as I sip my coffee beside the small pool
while my wife attends classes.
She flits all morning from door to door
speaking to everyone she meets.
Without fail she stops to speak
to the pigeons that line the low motel roof.
Tilting forward they listen intently,
then fly round the flag at the post office
sending away her message with feathered stamps.
They circle the radio and TV antennas
attaching her words to the speaking air
that passes them from cloud to cloud
till even the sun shines down his reception.
They disappear into the trees
passing her message from branch to branch.
It must be profound;
I sense her syllables seeping down
through roots to saturate the earth.
Today she detours toward me
as if she has recognized my curiosity.
As she passes she reveals the words
she proclaims every day for the whole world to hear.
“ Good morning,” she smiles,
and carries clean towels into the next room.

mmm, God is this what people do when we clean their rooms, lol, I work at a Days Inn, I try to speak to all our guest, I love my job, so it's not hard to smile and be happy. This also reminds me of a song from Gordon Lightfoot about a cleaning lady.

To watch others...is movies of life. To notice their ways and wonder their reasons.

A poetic feast.

I salute You, Poet.

A simple smile or greeting can have a profound and profitable effect on our everyday lives. As with the productive impact of a full breakfast on our energy levels first thing in the morning, a 'Good morning' from a stranger can set us up psycologically well prepared for the day ahead.

In this poem the woman gives us both - a word of greeting and also a smile. In other words, a socially uplifting feast.

David

Words are empty ghosts when they are not inhabited by the speaker's intent... and much more. You illustrate the importance and impact of this with a lovely tale.

I like this slice of your thoughts from small-town life; I can relate to it because there's a Budget Inn in almost every small town in the South, but very often the Cleaning Ladies are quite surly. You've found a truely happy well-adjusted one who loves birds! You've been posting some real modern Americana for us lately! Keep it coming...

Hope you buy a rose and give it to her before you leave with a good smile in retribution of that American Norman Rockwell's glimpse at the simple life of giving joy to others, even to those birds.
Thanks for the story.

You have taken something so simple...so everyday...and have made it into something special and wonderful. I can imagine the scene you painted so perfectly with your words.

The observation of another can find one within a world of simple acknowledgment ...you bring so much to us when you find these simple views of life Davis, and yet it is that simpleness where we find ourselves.

Nice work my friend...

enjoyed,

A cheery write-- very Spring. Every line warbles with twittering alliterations: "something mysterious"--those m's and s's trading spots; "cleaning lady"--the ee and the l repeating; "have watched her all week"-- again, with the h's and the w's... every line fluid and musical-- perky and ... well, thank you for bringing me spring! Finally!!! --Charlie
