I found the picture while trolling the Internet. I'm not normally inspired by pictures or paintings, but here's what came out. Shakespearean Sonnet - abab cdcd efef gg.

Poem Artwork

Borrowed Time (Sonnet)

Ripping upward through roots and layered soil

Feeling the ground shift, birthing me again

Hoping nothing above waits to spoil

Tonight’s promenade away from my den

I feel a shiver when I kiss nighttime

For oh so long we’ve been paramours

Countless times I’ve heard my name paired with rhyme

Harmonizing alongside metaphors

That husky timber chills me to the bone

A rich baritone curls along my spine

I’m but a disciple trailing that tone

A greedy spirit, wishing it were mine

Seems nighttime’s hands are a mist at my face

Tis his love I hope time cannot erase

This hour holds a stillness I adore

I walk the woods as one of the undead

I am what locals warn of in their lore

Fearful residents are early to bed

Stealing my chance with a stranger’s kindness

Hail innocence before it fades for good

Evil’s been disguised by a worn-torn dress

She has no idea what’s beneath my hood!

My body shakes with anticipation

I lower my hood to offer a smile

Planted there is a poor imitation

She sees what I’ve been plotting the whole while

Lips to hers, I wrestle my way inside

Soul be gone! This is where I now reside!

The stranger’s soul will return with daybreak

Loosed from its cage; it’s as ecstatic as I

And truly I have memories to make

With nighttime’s ambiance ‘round me...I sigh

Oh, every step…you can’t imagine…

It’s been months since I’ve felt ground ‘neath my stride

I’m excited for something to happen

My longing simply has no place to hide!

Through the night I wander amorously

Hugging scents to memory while they last

Trapped in a body, but actually free

Not having really lived life till it passed

Come day, twisted fate leaves me as before

Interred…awaiting what night has in store

Sheila, with just this write alone you have drained me of all my blood while I read. You have amazing visuals and your dark side is certainly that...yet oh so sensual.

This is so beautiful Shelia!
Every word and line and expressive visual...

I also want to mention how totally groovy
your intro line is about "trolling the Internet"!! :-)

Husky timbers in the writing here. Glad you did not leave these thoughts interred, as Shakespeare said about the good in us being interred with our bones. Good bones in this one, excellent!

This is totally awesome, Sheila. Your writing control is immense in this form and yet exudes a flow and an ease that is full-bodied and pours from line to line seamlessly. Some fabulous images and intriguing details and metaphors - PLUS a plot that keeps us wondering right until the very last few lines. This is fully accomplished writing and I do hope you publish it somewhere where it will get the attention it so richly deserves.

Remarkably well done
One of your very best! (IMO)
Kind of Ekphrastic in nature,
Especially beguiled with:
"Countless times I've heard my name paired with rhyme
Harmonizing alongside metaphors"
You know Sheila, you kinda steala my heart (with stuff like this) and make me feela a whole lotta. In the garden of your skill your gift keeps putting out fresh new blossoms that satisfy and intrigue.
Keep up the great work!

I felt as though I was in a Shakespearean play, the tender darkness, the mystery, the allure all the facets of a good write...You have done a splendid job here, Sheila! Bravo!! (Can I costume this one??lol)

I am left quite astounded and without the proper words to truly express myself adequately in reference to this fine, disciplined poetic offering, dear Sheila. Shakespeare would be proud indeed! You have written not one but three sonnets. Very impressive. I am respectfully humbled and grateful that you shared your gift. Love and best wishes to you,

Regis
