An old woman finding companionship

Frowning Lady

We’ve often seen her sitting there,
sadly looking at the ground.
This little lady with a very sad frown.
She thought all had left her,
She thought she had no friends.
She sat there troubled,
blown hard by life’s ill winds.
Her children gone, to states far away.
No grandkids for her to watch as they play.
Husband gone, many years ago now,
So she sits and wonders why and how.
She wonders as she sits there alone,
just what was the reason to live anymore.
An orange and white kitty, without a home,
hops up next to her and snuggles in her lap.
So strange she thinks, this cat is like me.
No one cares if I take a nap,
or have a sandwich or a cup of tea.
But the kitty was sleeping, soundly on her lap,
emitting soft purrs as it lay curled there.
Slowly she stroked the soft thing as it slept,.
It’s fur a little dirty seemed alright.
As she felt the kitty purr and stroked it’s fur
A small smile begin to show on her face.
I think this kitty was sent here for me,
As the good Lord knows I need it’s company.
She picks up the kitty and puts it to her cheek.
No one around to claim this waif
so I will take it with me she says to herself.
No more will I worry about just me
As I now have a friend for all to see.
The smile on her face has really grown,
as she stands and heads for home.
The frown is gone now, replaced by a smile.
This kitty, she says, will no longer roam
For I’ll feed it and let it share my home.
We don’t see her on that bench anymore.
Sitting there so sadly with a frown.
She’s now known as the Happy Lady
When she comes to town.

The elderly can find companionship in kittens if they can't get it from their fellow humans, too busy to stop and talk a while.

I'm reminded of the day a little black kitten appeared when my younger twin brothers were about nine or ten. They were jumping up and down and asking me, "Can we keep him… Can we!" I couldn't tell them one way or another, so I said,

"Ask your mother." They did. And they kept him.

Since I am a dog lover, I can well understand this.
