Animals
Something went 'BANG!' up in the sky.
And one piece cooled as it flew by.
A globe of green and blue it was,
Behold, the world. our earth on high.
The air here was quite pure and sweet,
Not too much frost nor too much heat
Because of this the things that swam
Soon crawled the ground with little feet.
Year by year these creatures grew
With sheep and cows and kangaroo,
Until one day they stood supreme;
Supreme, because, alone, they knew.
Now this strange animal called man
Could rule the earth and rule the land.
Not just because he was so great ---
Because he thought, ' I think I can.'
"Oh no!," cried all his family;
The cats and birds and chimpanzee,
"Your instincts, not your reasoning!
"Remember, you are just like we!'
But man could add up two plus two,
Saw problems and knew what to do,
And so he spoke to kith and kin,
"We're men not animals like you!"
"We're special , and in any in case,
Since we alone are the great race,
A 'thing" made us. Yes! Yes, that's right.
"And made us from a higher place!"
The tigers laughed, the lions roared.
The platypus looked simply bored.
"We're here, that's it! Just animals!
"That's all!" they yelled on one accord.
But each man thought, "That couldn't be.
"An accident? Oh no, not me!
"We're much too great. There must be more,
It's plain to for anyone to see."
And so they made a God to please
Lived under his moralities.
Watched what they said and what and what they did,
And whiled the hours on their knees.
Though man still thought that he was strong,
The animals knew he was strong,
For when he chose 'morality,'
His slow decay would not take long.
Slowly man gave up his lead.
Helped everyone with every need,
All in the hope of 'Kingdom Come,'
To instincts he now paid no heed.
Then, sin made him most meek and mild,
No longer brash, no longer wild,
Cast in a mold of good and bad,
The man became a weakened child.
His courage lost its vibrant flare:
"We must be good. We must take care!"
For others he now lived his life.
Too scared of 'Hell;' too tame to dare.
He's penned his brethren hogs in stalls,
Forced dogs and pets to answer calls
Caged them like he has caged himself---
Within the church and chapel walls.
He understands the creatures not
For he's misplaced what they've still got:
The pride, the strength and the free will.
He's lost it all. He's lost a lot.
And still the animals grow on
With perfect instinct, swift and strong.
They live for this, the only life
A slave to neither right nor wrong.
And man has missed a chance or ten
To live in strength; to just be men.
He sends his cash to Billy Graham,
And waits for Christ someday, But when?
