Terra Purgatorio

God is in Heaven,

And Satan’s in Hell,

But I’ve seen the face of neither.

No Christian am I,

But no atheist,

So when I consider either,

My mind’s sometimes drawn

To Catholic beliefs

Of Limbo, where souls take a breather.

For what else is earth?

Who dares call this life?

What Father would bless us with pain?

We must have done wrong,

And here make amends;

From past sins must learn to refrain.

There’s nowhere so cruel,

No time so ill spent,

Unless here, in this world, we’re arraigned.

This life’s then a coin

Tossed down in a cup

Held out by impoverished souls.

A one-time reprieve;

A governor’s stay

Before being tossed to the coals.

And each day’s a test;

Jehovah’s UA

‘Fore Lord Jesus will grant our paroles.

And life’s a ‘time-out;’

A swat on our butts;

We’ve been sent to our room with no meal.

Our souls have been tried,

The sentence passed down,

Yet our Maker still cuts us a deal:

To save us through Christ,

 And spare us from Hell,

Yet this plea bargain can’t be revealed.

We’re unaware, and

Oblivious to

The fact that we get one more chance.

If not, any change

Or growth in our hearts

Is false and no grounds to advance.

If our souls transform,

It must be our choice,

And a show of our true moral stance.

And so, we each live

And stumble along,

Quite ignorant as to our pain.

And never think that

This miserable time

Filled with cancer, consumption, and strain,

Is not our first time

In corporeal form,

But result of a jealous God’s bane.

For look all around,

You’ve not seen the ache?

The agony, the anguish, the grief?

The infants with AIDS,

The homeless old men;

And most days for them there’s no relief,

But prayer and the hope

A new day will dawn

Where their suffering won’t always be chief.

But madness still reigns,

And sin still prevails,

Our President pandered for sex.

Then looked in the lens,

And lied most sincere,

His deception, a simple reflex.

While we that were duped,

Can’t muster a care

Between Prozac and government checks.

Starvation and droughts,

Earthquakes and floods,

Disasters now spanning our earth.

There’re kids toting guns,

And crack smoking whores

Selling children for twenty rocks worth.

And who can you blame?

The addicts? The poor?

Their dads were in jail at their birth!

Planes have been hijacked,

And buildings are bombed

For race or beliefs of all kinds.

Serial killers

Are stalking the streets

With their warped and dysfunctional minds.

And those who seek help

Can turn on the tube

For a reverend with ‘Send Money’ signs.

If that’s not enough

And you still need a fix

For how sick our society grows...

Switch the remote

For lesbian fights

On the top-rated Springer talk shows.

So smile, take your fill,

It’s all that we have

‘Til our life here draws down to a close.

Now why your strange look;

Your questioning eyes,

Did I not paint the picture so well?

You still disbelieve?

Perhaps I do too,

On some topics no one can tell.

Suffice it to say,

If these thoughts are wrong,

Then, perhaps we’re already in Hell.

You write some very thought-provoking lines, sometime making use of a provocative tone. It's really interesting to follow the structure of this piece of writing and see where the author wants to lead us. You chose to emphasize the numerous painful contradictions of our world and I appreciate the intent.

Scott,
You raise many issues with this thoughtful write. Seeing sick children really is beyond disturbing. Many ask why it happens if God is just. I like to think that a sick baby is God's way of trying to stir compassion in all of us. It's worked on you, me, and millions of others. But He's still got millions to reach. Morally we are declining as a society. Perhaps many see the homeless as dangerous and that's why they turn their eyes away - as if a homeless person is the proverbial monkey in the jungle one should not look in the eye unless one wants to risk attack. Or perhaps guilt turns their heads? They don't realize that, given the right circumstances, they could just as easily be using newspaper to stay warm. Crime is on the rise, too. Broken families, abuse, the economy, the religious decline, society's lack of condemnation...all of these things are contributors. I sometimes think progress was not in our best interest. Now see how you've got me going? Excellent work on this exploratory piece. This is a wonderful, intelligent example of how we search a lifetime for these answers. In the end, we must look ourselves in the mirror - that doesn't mean anything to some. Hugs:)

Wow, loved this, not surprised, great ending, Jean Paul Sartre would be proud and the truth sometimes does seem that "hell is other people." I really loved this. The best part is that you gave some excellent philosophical comments and ideas within a poem that actually works in rhyme and meter, really impressive, I know I for one, would screw that all up, lol. I like the title, being Italian, I would, lol, plus it reminds me of a modern day Dante-being Catholic, I appreciate why limbo has appeal as well, and there is a wonderful book by Cynthia Rylant, a well-known children's author about that-but I digress- I think we all could use a stop over prior to heaven to get our proverbial shit together! There is so much in every line that I agree with, especially the Clinton comment, but too much to go into as a comment here,so I will end this by saying I love it! :) Take care, Michelle

We're all little potatoes floating around in society soup. Sure, we'll all succumb to earth's digestive tract at sometime... in the meantime, the trick is to rise above the burner as much as possible, and stay whole. Once you turn to spiritual mush, you disappear into the societal goop, and saving yourself is pretty much impossible... But there is an Alchemist who can put the pieces back together-- okay, bad analogy. It does feel like that sometimes, though. --Charlie

Methinks we are on Earth, our only home. Deep in our brain we still have reptilian urge to rip the guts out of our enemy and torment the meek. God does not keep it at bay. Only our thin frontal lobes of reason keep us from going berserk.

Good Morning Scott,
WOW! Deep!
Hummm? I think things are for purpose, (questioning that now-AGAIN!) however you have turned my eyes to wonder WHY, like the babies, the homeless, all the perils of man & woman, & child. It is to complicated for me to even try. I think greed & selfishness & control & demands harming another for a self to achieve is a large part of it. There are so many sides you open in your words for perspectives & reflection.
