The next morn Kate departed much as if she'd never heard
The loud 'goodbyes!' or saddened cries,
But grabbed the cash, and made a dash
To leave without a word.
Marie rushed out to catch her so she'd not be left behind.
Kate screamed, "Get lost! And save the cost
Of one more fare!" "I wouldn't dare!
"Kate, please, I'm being kind!"
Still, Kate tried every insult that she had in mind to throw.
To her dismay, not one would sway
The other's will to be there still
On reaching the depot.
At noon, they paid their fares and found their seats to start the trek.
"Oh come now, Kate, you must feel great!
"Don't wear a frown." "Shut up! Sit down!
"Before I break your neck!"
With that, the driver blew the horn and pulled the gear shift down;
They felt the jerk of wheels at work,
With pedal floored, the engine roared
And left the little town.
