Begorrah! Tis a poem in response to "The South Side Irish Song/Poem" that appeared in the local papers and just in time for St. Patty's Day [with special thanks to the author of 'McNamara's Band" for such a fine, emerald inspiration.]
Our name was once McNeven
I'm a diehard Cubbie fan
And though we've had our bad teams
We've the best fans in the land.
Of course I've seen some losses
Since I've watched them many a game
With a number of fine players
Now in the Hall of Fame.
Oh, the bats they rang; the children sang
As we saw our heroes play
With Ernie singing a joyful tune
When Ronnie'd save the day.
Old Leo would often marvel
Sweet Billy was something grand
All a credit to our baseball boys
In Wrigley's Ivy Land.
Whenever there's a season on
It's North against South side
Since the White Sox turned their souls to black
Most folks've had Cubbie pride.
For if dear St. Patty were living now
He'd make them understand
That the best in all Chicago
Lies in Wrigley's Ivy Land.
They'll win it all in 2004
And always be on call
And the fans will pass the turnstyles
Before the umpire cries, "Play ball!"
They'll surely win the Series
And shake each and every hand
Where no one has ever seen the likes
In Wrigley's Ivy Land.
Just now they are in training
For this very grand affair
To start such a celebration
That the Mayor must be there.
The girls and boys will all turn out
With flags and colors grand
And form a line for concessions
In Wrigley's Ivy Land.
Oh, we have back our own Greg Maddux
With our young arms still to come
To play in Wrigley's Ivy Land
And beat our enemies numb.
And when they march along the streets
The city will think them grand
They'll chant for Sammy Sosa
playing in Wrigley's Ivy Land.
Oh, their sleeves will be marked with bear cubs
On a uniform mostly white
While Dusty'll be the finest manager
We've ever had in sight.
While over off the Ryan
The Sox will be simply bland
And their fans will be a'cryin'
But not in Wrigley's Ivy Land.

Tis a great poem, so lyrical it tis, twas a joy to read of the warin of the uniform in Ole Ivy Land.
This book tells the story of the 1999 Providence College Friars baseball team, the last season that the sport was played at the institution. Baseball was set to be eliminated after that season in order for the school to comply with Title IX regulatio
