Miami Lullaby

by Betty Jo Tucker — Read all 96 poems by Betty Jo Tucker

The recent collapse of a Miami condo motivated me to write the sad poem below.

Wednesday, June 30, 2021

Poem Artwork

Miami Lullaby

Snug in their beds, they’re all asleep.

Some dream light dreams. Others dream deep.

Suddenly, they spin through the dark.

Shadows follow without a spark.

Where are they now? We want to know.

Worries and doubts begin to grow.

Rescuers work from night to dawn.

Afraid that many will be gone.

This tragedy has touched our hearts

Oh, the humanity! Not just charts.

We bless the victims come what may.

No one should face this kind of day.

How sad…we heard of this incident on our UK news,
But you have brought the story to light with all its
humanitarian consequences..
This is a fine and sensitive tribute to those who lost their lives…

I'm surprised that it's not occurring more often. Florida is experiencing increasing sinkholes and there are probably many older buildings that have not been condemned where people are living every day and don't know what danger they are in until it happens.

And for me, it's my preferred way of dying because it happened all in an instant. While there so for gaps in the rubble that would support surviving life, the size of the rubble, would suggest there are no voids and that the residents were immediately crushed at the bottom of their fall. They would certainly feel the fall and the pressure of, perhaps, the ceiling coming down on them, but it would last but an instant before they were dead.

Finally, I have to assume that most of the residents were retired from their work life and elderly. But certainly, the children and young adults did not get to live their full lives.

I am cheering the searchers. They are my kind of hero.

Life can be snuffed out in a moment when we least expect it.
We cannot change the past, but a few gifted writers can help
us get beyond the pain. You have done that so well.

From the pictures that were shown to the public, it seems to me that the building was only built with flimsy steel wires and concrete. From what I learned the building inspectors have been around to inspect the building numerous times and they reported their findings to the building management that the building was sinking and was unsafe for dwelling, but the building continues to receive occupants. Not sure if any repair work has been done since the '90s.

Indeed, so true, Betty, no one should have to. This event strikes close because I live in a condo only a few miles distant from the event of the condo disaster in Miami. It really is unimaginable. Your poem gives fine tribute to those who died. Very sensitive and touching. Thank you for writing this and posting.

You tell it well Betty. It's a tragedy that has gripped our hearts here and brought many tears. I heard this morning that the work has stopped because of the instability of the standing part of the structure. My god, I can't imagine what these people are going through. Bless you for sharing this. Well done. rlc
