To Sleep?

Sleep, often elusive.


at the western side of my abode
white oak and pine consumed the
sun’s rays dispensing with the day
in the eastern sky moonlight sieves
in a dancing array through century
old branches that reach out to the
ebony sky and charcoal clouds
peace settles in the dogs have
ceased their barking ornamental
grass stopped swishing with the
breezes demise, calm is prevalent
except within my thoughts that now
rush in to race bidding for my attention
arresting the sweet dreams of slumber
so I will lay me down my body to
refresh while my mind plays a game
that requires full physical awareness
real and imaginary issues vie for
prominence while my body screams
for the mercy of nourishing sleep

Jon Michael, it's never easy to sleep with so much on your mind. The images and ambiance are wonderfully presented. Enjoyed.

Good to see you posting again. Yours is a take of "now I lay me down to sleep," that yearns for that peaceful sleep of childhood, forever gone.

Yep. Been there. Done that. It is an awful feeling to be in that particular situation. And the more you lay there hoping for sleep, the further away sleep is from you.
