The Leap Year

Being poor
gave away to rich dreams
and higher expectations,
higher than most dared to hurdle.

I was told
I raised the bar to high-

Men
their attempts to leap _
                                       _
                                             always fell short.

There was always the New Year
the potential
of resolutions and beginnings.

The ticking of clocks-
t-i-c-k-t-o-c-k t-i-c-k-t-o-c-k
time
ticking into past.

At the ringing of the New Year
a stranger's eyes held my gaze until
stride by stride and inquisitive eyes
swallowed the space in-between us.

Bending to whisper in my ear
sounds fell from his lips to mine.
The kiss
like the birth of a star
all consuming
paralyzing time-

His touch and mine,
were like velvet flames
which leaped, licked and flickered
as if it spoke a new language
our hearts could not deny

                                      the promise.
