For Eva (reflections on McKinley) 1972

by Kalikiano Kalei — Read all 118 poems by Kalikiano Kalei

Something from the early 1970s, probably amply as much encouraged by the 'one-pot-glop' my UCB physicist (soon to turn to ballet studies) climbing partner had ladled out into our bowls the prior evening as by any residual hormonal prompting, as we sat in our high camp, cursed with zero appetites but blessed with not-quite-perfect-but-good-enough-weather to bag the sucker (apologies to Denali).

Poem Artwork

FOR EVA (Reflections of Mt. McKinley) 1972

Crusting winter tears

Soft as Eiderdown

Hard as iceaxe steel

Flew wind-borne at my face

As I grinned

Out of the tent

Into the burning fire of dawn.

For at least an hour

My thoughts had flown

About the peaks

And down our col

To shout And play

With whines of joy

Among our shelter shrouds.

Inside, the other beard

Still drugged with chloral hydrate sleep

Lay still and unaware

Of my silent solo

Ascent of the day’s

Yet unbegun Adventure.

It snorted once, then was still.

High above,

The towering mass

Of ice and rock Lay

fixed with an enormity

That labored the feeble

Recall of

My recent imagination.

A caress of zephyr from the peak

Smelt, I sensed, like

A moist but fragrant

Lover’s kiss.

And then I was alone

Gasping into the mouth of ice above,

My eyes resisting

The sting,

Lungs screaming In celebration,

Feet beating steps

Into that wilderness of white

And mind.

Any thought removed, but

Seeing all too clearly

Another clime

Another aroma, A subtle scent heady

With human yearning.

Burnished flowers Of yellow and ivory.

And then I awoke.

Oh, Ron! You're SO literal! If you must know, we were near the summit of Mt. Mineral King (not McKinley) and the storm was V..E..R..Y real (just about blew our tent down the slope). It wasn't just ordinary GLOP, either (it was ramen & tuna), and 'the beard' had a small mouth opening just below his mustache (that was frosted over). Before he woke up he released a HUGE fart (no, not from his mouth) that didn't help things one bit! There! Now you have all my little secrets from that climb! -K2

Certainly, she loved (or will love) this one. As I read, I couldn't help thinking that you were actually there, climbing in the footsteps of RFK and others who had made the summit. Surely with words like these, you had actually experienced… And then I was struck by the last line as though it were only a dream?
