Donner Summit Snow Sheds

by Kalikiano Kalei — Read all 118 poems by Kalikiano Kalei

Snow sheds were commonly used to protect the old steam locomotives that each winter braved the ferocious snowstorms that sweep the High Sierras' Donner Summit with sterile precision. Life has taught me well enough, that when it comes to our natural biological urges, there are no such similar analogic constructs from which to seek protection against love's frequent icy precipices and caverns of disastrous depression. That light at the end of the tunnel! Is it an exit...or merely the engine of pending Doom as it dashes relentlessly forward to obliterate you?

Donner Summit Snow Sheds

The air, with vaporous icy blades,

Carves out one’s breath.

High-up on the rocky verge,

Clear blue forever beckons

Beyond the gaping maw of Tunnel #6.

Punching a hole through

To blackened infinity, the bore-hole,

Hand-blasted out of living rock by

Long departed Chinese workers,

Beckons with the adrenal allure of

Any forbidden fruit to be found

In Nature’s primal garden.

There are ghosts, oh yes!

They flit through the chill airiness

Ever unseen but acutely felt

In the brief passage of time.

Below, the azure bowl of Donner Lake

Sits, postcard-perfect and distally calm,

Amidst sylvan forests of verdant green.

Finally, we emerge, half fearful still

Of phantasmagoric trains that once

Chuffed their way through the dank

Mountain’s vaginal recesses, perched above

The macabre site that now marks

The Donner Party’s final soiree,

Some thirty years removed.

The experience reminds me of

Every single woman I’ve ever known

And a few I haven’t…

Your story foray through the heights of Donner Pass take me back some 50 years looking down and seeing those labored railroad tracks snaking along the rivers and canyons far below shielded in places by what appeared to be wooden sheds keep the tracks clear and the trains moving whenever a snowstorm, avalanche, both of snow or rocks, came tumbling down to block the passage no more.

The last three lines though, are very telling of your motive for writing this piece… Peace!

Ron
