For J. (V)

by Kalikiano Kalei — Read all 118 poems by Kalikiano Kalei

Back in the early 70s, I was madly in love/lust with a really hot young dialysis nursie in Berkeley (most young nursies were hotties, back then, in the days of white minnie-skirted RNs). She ultimately left me for a local USN Reservist flying A-7s out of NASA Alameda whose 'cool' would have made Tom Cruise look like a nerd! I somehow managed to get over all the heartache, but it took me a good 50 years to fully exorcise those puerile demons. We remain friends (after 50 years!) but she's now married to a former Bakersfield Wildcatter (oil field worker) and seems to be happy enough. Let this be a lesson to all you younger dudes out there! NEVER willingly give your heart (or yer putz) to a sexy NYC graduate of the Catholic Parochial School system who drives a Poor-she 914 in her Birkenstocks!

Poem Artwork

FOR JOANIE (V) .......Berkeley, 6 Jul 73

The heart is a lonely hunter

whose quarry is the soul

And the truth it seeks

Is a flash of sun on

The flanks of a newborn foal,

Or the flowers that yield

To a rising wind

On the summit of a haggard peak,

Or even the shell of

A renegade clam

Held tight in a seagull's beak.

All these and more,

For the quest goes on

That can never have an end

Till the eyes cease seeing,

The heart beats no more,

And the soul has ceased

To rend...

Indeed, the heart is a lonely hunter and I love your images, which, it is safe to say, haven't been seen together in any other poem. Writing poetry is what makes us unique, and answers the question, "What have you done that nobody else has done?" So keep on writing and your words will be forever etched somewhere in the universe.

Falling in love is easy, but falling out of love is hard, especially for those who are in love for the first time in their lives. Nothing could more devastating.
