clever he is, she thought,
her kids bedded down on the big queen,
her chair blocking the door.
he knows this motel, he's bound
to churn the miles to get
here, holding his gun
near his chest,
praying words to help
him murder.
still she balanced meanings,
her lover sitting tight,
her own mind fractured,
her kids safe for now,
good chicken dinner
in their tummies.
funny how the click
of clock makes it
all eerie, inevitable,
like the chills
you feel at a horror
flick, neck-hair
rising. left leg
bouncing in heart-beat
rhythm.
this would make an outstanding lead into a story...there is a lot not being said here, which allows the reader to fill in the gaps...the suspense if great filling the reader with ominous expectation.
