an early moment before rain,
the thunder too far away
to damage eardrums
or pull people off their porches.
the darkening forest still
allowed light to sift
past big trunks and three deer,
spooked by passing cars,
plummeted noiselessly
onto brown needles
shorn by the tall pines.
woods darkening now, the fireflies
lifted from damp ground,
their little lights flashing
till the woods blinked,
a preview of larger
lightning shows approaching
with relentless fury
from the west.
