surrounded as we are
by spirits,
we long also for the hush
of wings,
that aura of protection
each time we step
from the curb.
and we feel grateful
each time an angel sighs
or when these spirits stop
to save a child,
rushing to sweep up
a two-year-old
before his father
backs over him
with a mammoth gas-guzzler.
we applaud such angelic acts,
and modestly the haloed
beings smile, for saving
the innocent is their
duty, and every waking
hour they spend, flashing
their wings, saving our
children, slipping
gracefully into swimming
pools to save our
kids from drowning.
how blessed we are
to have them,
how lovely of the Divine Spirit
to offer these creatures
in his quest
to heed our prayers.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
