When I was a child my world was small
Where my imagination was my best friend
I could fly, save the day, and rescue victims
Who found themselves captured by a monster
Who dared to devour, eviscerate, and destroy
This when I was only a little boy
When I was a teen my world grew larger
Where my self-centeredness was my only ally
I could disobey, disregard, and disavow rules
Which I found irrelevant and suffocating
I dared to devour, eviscerate, and destroy
This when I thought I was no longer a boy
In corporate America my world expanded
Where my zeal for success was only matched
By my ego and pride that I could do no wrong
I found my family to be distracting and needy
I dared to spin the truth and my plan
This when I was only a young man
Now I’m retired my world grows smaller
Where life lessons were too late learned
I now find God to be my only strength
Where I surrender self to Him who knows all
Where knowing the truth sets me free
This when I was only me
