Tend to Your Garden...

Sow seeds ... provide the needs

Tend to your garden…

Will you please
stop sowing
so many seeds…
you can’t care for all of them
and provide their needs.

Your buds are pretty
but are struggling to grow
for your grass is wild
and you refuse to mow.

Your dandelions are running wild
the roses are beginning to wilt
you forgot to feed and water them
in the greenhouse that you built.

provide the plants with
what they need, like
lights, water and food you see
add a little love
from you and me.

But whatever you do, Mister
don’t plant any more seeds
amongst the weeds
if you are not going stay
and care for them
day after day.

I couldn't agree more, there is such a thing as safe sowing and if you don't care to wear the gloves when you garden - then tie a knot in the hose - too much water is never a good thing. I truly enjoyed this write.

This screams Dead Beat Dads!! at me at the top of its voice... seed-planting has become a sport in lieu of gardening. So many beautiful blooms wilting, just as your poem says. Great topic, great structure, powerful mesage, and wonderful metaphore. The last line is less powerful than the line before it, so it doesn't need to be there. It's a solid-good poem, Lavender. Good job. --Charlie

And year after year! How can anyone miss the point of this one?! Well done and it seems to become ever more timely. Here in New Boston, Texas, we have a rural city where a great percentage of the population is single women with children, all of them struggling to provide basic needs, and too many of them finding release from the burden in drugs. Life has become a closed loop of futility for many of them. Were they partially at fault? Of course, but that does not erase the cavalier crime of the fathers, nor the naive hopefulness of the mothers. The children will pay for this. Good "husbandry" is a two-way street.
