lightning struck maple
that tree took one in the heart
a bolt that lit the kitchen
leaving ozone smell and
splashing a circle of thunder
blowing sapwood through
bark like matching ellipses
on a green page
that tree gnawed off limbs
like a trapped animal
the east side healed
the west wound
opened to wood wasps
it tapped the sewer line
drinking the debris of decades
sending up roots lying in wait
for lawnmower blades
that tree and I dance
at dusk to silent music
Reindeer
