Poltical poetry that may not be what you expect.

An uncle born at the dawn of the 20th century
Lived to be ninety-two
Telling stories of a young man
Waiting with hundreds of others
On dark mornings praying for work
Loading railroad freight cars for pennies
While men called robber barons grew wealthy beyond avarice
And yellow-journalist, media barons built castles
In the hills above West Coast beaches.

there was no job protection
for the working man
no minimum wage
no medical
no retirement
not for the drones
that lived in factory housing
and shopped at the factory store
while selling their children into servitude
to work in the coal mines
so families wouldn't starve
after the Oklahoma Dust Bowl drove the farmers out
breaking more backs

Women fought and went to jail to earn the right to vote and own property.
Laws were born to protect children from factory, coalmine slavery.
The birth of labor unions was bloody and violent.
The Right hated FDR for selling out to the worker bees
Creating Social Security along with minimum wages and other benefits
For the masses, who were meant to serve the elite.

Unions brought about retirement and medical plans
Through collective bargaining,
A democratic process where citizens
Were given another voice and another way to vote,
Earning a bad name due to the Jimmy Hoffas of the world,
And called socialists, another dirty word created by the Right

With Rush Limbaugh as king,
Conservative talk radio is a
Hundred-percent biased empire
Growing distrust by calling the traditional media liberal.
Rush's voice says he is the most dangerous man in America.
His twenty million ditto heads don't have to think,
While he, who thinks for them, deposits thirty-three million a year.

Queen Coulter walks the streets
With the likes of Beck and Prager
Changing the meaning of liberal to something evil,
A word that belongs to devils
Smiling all the way to the bank
With one New York Times Bestseller after another.
More than two centuries ago, British royalists
Wanted the first president of the United States to fail.
Others urged Washington to become America's first king.

Long live the king and queen, who wants the 44th President,
Elected by the American democratic process,
Born through blood sacrifice
and the flames of rebellion—
To fail.
It seems that John Steinbeck,
Who earned the Pulitzer and Nobel Prize for Literature
Writing about the plight of the American worker,
Has been forgotten.
Let the good times roar.

History retold in powerful lines of rememberance, Lloyd. Have also heard that those that forget history are condemned to repeat it. (Or something like that.) Excellent.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Lloyd,
Admirable passion and compassion in this powerful pen, and your understanding of history is simply excellent...you know your stuff!
Fine writing indeed.

A profound and compelling write. I cannot understand, with all that is at stake, why anyone would want our President to fail.

Steinbeck is one of my favorites. Your poem has forced me to search my copy of the Grapes of Wrath. Our political views may only be slightly different; concatenating a diverse set of events/things/media gimmicks is something worth pondering. You have done a fabulous job!
