The first half of this poem was written during a time when I felt very low and depressed one day. That same day the rest of the poem was written after my mood had taken a positive turn. A reminder that as frightening as dark times may seem - hang in there and you will come through and one day look back on how far you have come.

Depression
Tammi L. Morgan

All alone; darkness falls. One by one, the stars disappear to black and are swallowed by woven tree tops. There is no one near now or so it seems. I am left in total solitude. I do not know which way to turn for fear I may fall; afraid of the unknown. I hear noises, but do not know where they come from. I hear laughter, but feel only tears. There is no joy here. I sit alone and wait. I wait for light to come, but soon each minute passes with the feeling of hours. Not a spec of light can be seen. I can wait no longer. Why does no one come for me? Why can no one hear my cry? If they will not help, I will just sit, and soon I will feel inner happiness as others do. I wait, hours pass, I grow colder. I fall into sleep.

I awaken by birds singing, although I cannot see them, I know they are singing with happiness. I smell wild flowers and grass. Although I cannot see it, I know life is going on around me. Why do I feel so empty? I begin to run back the way I entered the woods. Branches slap against me. I run in countless directions. I can run no longer. I sit again. Suddenly I realize it was all for nothing. I am still no better off than I was before. I sleep again.

This time I awaken to voices in the distance. I am filled with fear. They are calling me, but I am afraid to be found. They will only leave me again. Its better to stay alone; I begin to cry.

Suddenly I am startled by a touch on my shoulder. I turn and find a friend. Although I cannot see clearly, I can make out a form. I must decide; I can either stay, or follow the lead of the hand that reaches and holds mine. I can’t be forced to go, but I know I must. So we walk together. We stumble less. Soon we grow tired and stop; sleep comes quickly.

This time I awaken to light. I turn and see behind me a small clump of woods swollen with vines and thorns and cold with darkness. I am warm now. I turn to thank my unseen friend, but I am alone again. The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and as I walk forward, I turn and see the woods disappear behind me. I hope I will never return. It is much better to be filled with inner joy than to be stuck in self pity and solitude.
