She Knew What She Knew

Tribute to my friend, Judy Conroy, who died just weeks after falling in love in a way she had not believed possible.

She believed she had lost touch with childhood.
Yet, she championed children with every chance she had.
Her heart had been where theirs were.
She did not know what she knew.

She felt she was not artistic.
Yet, she crafted poems of pure love,
and drew flowers as delicate as morning dew.
She did not know what she knew.

She would say she was out of step with the nature of life.
While plants and animals thrived around her,
thrilling to her tender care for them, like Cinderella.
She did not know what she knew.

She judged herself as slacking
compared to the productivity and service of others.
While weekly, she supported friends and neighbors,
with rides and favors, a listening ear, an encouraging word.
She did not know what she knew.

She questioned spiritual essence with conviction.
"What is the name of Spirit? What is Spirit?
Who can ever really know that, for God's sake?"
she would declare incredulously.
She did not know what she knew.

Still, deep within the spontaneous reach
of her soul outstretched to seekers
forlorn and truly lost, would come her calm assurance.
"The name of God is Love. God is Love,
and that Love is you right now."
She did not know what she knew.

Verily, like the sacred candle
that cannot perceive its own radiance,
she found her true reflection in the eyes of Love born anew.
Sharing his laughter, compassion, humanity and quest for Life,
with joy overflowing at long last
she knew what she knew.
