a poem written by Rodney O'Neil Jones in memory of the late great jazz legend John Coltrane

2 TRANE: TRUE TRANE

(for Legendary Jazz Great John Coltrane)

Blue Train,

True Trane,

Your improvisational jazz licks,

Sticks to the times of history,

Your tenor sax became an angel’s harp,

As your music is a heavenly mystery to me,

You delivered A Love Supreme,

As a melodic soliloquy given unto God,

You traveled a soulful journey that would take you so far,

Your soul breathed life into an infinitive sound,

That would influence many generations to follow,

With passionate emphasis on my every note,

As you began with yesterday and would take us to tomorrow,

A powerful trip established with jazz licks that forever sticks to the times of history,

Many are still compelled buy your mystery,

Legendary status you achieved,

Your thought provoking harmonies constantly speak to me,

As I embrace the essence of TRANE,

Blue Train,
True Trane,

Sent to us to change the way music would be,

Transcending life lines

Music minds,

So others could be properly trained,

True Trane,

Blue Train,

Sacred and soulful yet instrumentally profane.
