Currency of Creation

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Early morning rise often affords a time unlike any other to reflect and dream awake. The last two mornings have rewarded me with clarity of purpose. (Painting by Andrew Wyeth)

 Currency of Creation

How lavish these quiet currencies,
minted in the small hours of “what if,”
spending nothing,
owing nothing,
outlasting the flashing stock exchange
of applause and spectacle.

They carry no logo,
no ticker symbol,
only the soft hum of a mind daring to wander
past the fences of certainty.

Imagination does not invest in gold;
it trades instead in maybes and could-be’s,
a wind threading through open windows,
lifting curtains in rooms we forgot we had.

It nods like a stranger on a morning street,
simple, unadorned,
yet leaves behind a resonance
like a tuning fork struck in the chest.

A creative mind is not a throne room.
It is a field,
sometimes fallow,
sometimes wild with color,
where ideas rise like dandelions

through the cracks of routine.

No crown rests here.
No vault can hold it.

Just as a seed requires only dirt and light,
so too does vision ask for the smallest permission:
a glance inward,
a pause between breaths,
a willingness to feel without invoice.

In this way,
the unnoticed Van Goghs of living,
those sketching beauty in grocery lines,
in traffic lights,
in grief’s quiet corners,
create galaxies with nothing but patience
and pulse.

Their work travels not by spotlight
but by echo,
rippling outward in unseen waves,
finding harbor in the unguarded heart.

Creation does not crave the stage.
It prefers the workshop of the unseen,
where fingerprints matter more than fame,
where the act itself is both question and answer.

Yet how often
the world mistakes brilliance for noise,
gilding the cage,
tightening the wire,
offering applause as a leash.

Fame, a carnival mirror,
distorts the maker into the made,
until the hand forgets its freedom
and paints for the crowd instead of the sky.

What begins as a river
risks becoming a pipeline,
pressurized, directed, sold.

Blood and brass at the finish line,
where victory is measured not in wonder
but in weight.

And still…

Thankfully, defiantly,
some slip through.

They become weather instead of monument,
current instead of crown,
choosing the anonymous miracle
of making over the heavy costume
of being known.

They are the keepers of Spartan riches:
those who gather abundance in moments,
in meaning,
in the delicate electricity
between thought and feeling.

Their wealth is recursive,
a loop of giving and becoming,
where inspiration bows only to its source
and never to demand.

No invoice follows their work,
no lockbox contains it.

Only this:
a quiet, ever-renewing exchange,
the heart asking,
the mind answering,
and somewhere between them

a spark saying,
what if…

A meditation on the invisible, some invisible, elements that sustain the creative spirit. Certainly, we've got the world’s noisy, pride-filled spectacles — applause, success, fame—with the quiet, limitless wealth of imagination working in the margins. The imagery of ideas rising like dandelions through the cracks of routine is especially striking. The poem honors those anonymous creators: "The heart asking, the mind answering, and somewhere between them, a spark saying what if,,,." The true value of any form of creation lies in its resonance and not solely in its recognition.
