Courage Knows Not Retreat

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

For many of us men, the complexities of being part of or to merely be there for a companion’s confrontation of obstacles is one of our most difficult challenges. Yet, to truly make an effort to be there for them is a privilege far too many men avoid or never confront when it is in both the man and woman’s best interest to go the extra distance is a privilege and an honor to experience.

 Courage Knows Not Retreat

Consciousness takes time,

She was lifted from darkness

Even as his senses were yet to awaken

Having discovered.

Her exposure was overwhelming

As center stage spotlights

Bore down with ruthless confinemen.

No longer could she be but a shadow

in the wings of impending entrances.

Time raced forward

ushering her presence into yet another scene,

another moment where truth had no escape,

where risk was a habit learned

and exiting in any direction was not an option,

for selfish men had made life for her

nothing but one audition after another.

It was when…

Demands of her role as woman transcended childhood belittling

when compliance to adulthood’s demands

did she turned her back on the audience

allowed her being to breath deeply

finding courage was willing to come out from the wings

that she turned back to face her judgement assemblage,

determined to jump into the deep waters and finally swim.

The curtain finally dropped and for the first time

She heard applause for her

For the girl who had finally conquered resistance to womanhood.

Finally…

She had the opportunity to really bow with gratefulness

Courage had not come easily,

But without it

She knew her self-defeat was not who she was.

She had finally leanred and accepted

Courage knows not retreat.

I sense you might be writing about how women, in the 20th century, worked hard to leave the stereotype of mother and nurturer of children. Always in the backdrop, never taking center stage except in the home where they were required to keep the home for their man regardless of how hard it was..

Since then women have made great strides and have even broken the glass ceiling where they are sometimes CEOs, Prime Ministers or presidents.

My partner and I have a 90/10 relationship. She takes care of 90% of the household and me. She also is the owner of her own successful business and supports some members of her family. Those around her think she is superwoman. I agree. Without her, my life probably would be miserable.

Your words lay upon the page with your familiar clarity — courage as something lived, not claimed. You remind us that the soul’s forward motion is its proof, that retreat is only for those who’ve never truly stepped into themselves and/or taken ownership. Your voice carries that steady flame so familiar to me as a reader, urging readers toward a road that offers challenge and in the acceptance reveals. Powerful, timely piece.
