It’s 12:17 a.m., I hear your tennis shoes, swooshing down the hallway- stopping momentarily, to check on each of our children- One of the other or both needs to be recovered- So you do- then you lean to kiss their sleepy cheeks- …and make your way to my waiting, loving arms-
Tonight the hallway holds an eerie silence; Breaching the contract between my mind and arms- If only I could see your face; Outline your lips with the tips of my fingers; Smell your freshly showered body- Feel your weight pressing down on the edge of our bed- If only I could-
Tomorrow I’ll have no choice but to say my goodbyes, and yes there will be tears with painful grief and sorrow- Yes there will be a lifetime of lonely days and nights- Yes there will be countless sleepless moments of hugging your pillow and sobs of agonizing and hurt- but you’ve not left my arms empty or abandoned my heart- just as I’ve not abandoned you on our last night together-
It’s 12:17 a.m., and nothing or nobody can take that away from us- I can hear you in the hallway- and the creaking door as you slowly peek in on our children- I can smell your freshly showered body; and your weight pushing down on the edge of our bed- And I’ll trace your lips over and over again- and it will be 12:17 a.m., forever-
I love this, and I am deeply moved by the changes which transpired. This is very lovely expression; including many, and more feelings, to give. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us....
This is a poem that cuts deep into the heart, Lisa. The pain and the strength of your words held tight in memories of final moments and within an eternity of broken dreams brings to the forefront the bond that never dies. The spirits that sing as one will never be silenced. Heartbreaking, yet painted with the beauty and perfection of your golden quill.
Take care,
Sherry
