Penny Wishes

From an early age
she was told to wish upon stars,
yet, none of the wishes came true ,
like a grand trip to Disneyland,
or for lilac bush switches to break
while they stung her legs
during homework time,
or that she could learn arithmetic in a hurry.
She wished for more real friends,
like Mary Opfer and Jimmy Milligan,
who didn't mess with her on the playground,
She wished for kinder teachers
who didn't criticize so much...
the little stuff that mattered most,
and the big stuff, too, like for her
brothers and sisters to come from afar
to love her.
As she strolled through life, wishing upon stars,
picking up "face up" copper pennies,
she learned "knights" were often
love-impaired,
full of deception, void of emotions,
narcistic, sometimes cruel...
till one day, at her worst,
she traded her bag of pennies for Reality,
and began to wear like iron.
