The last stanza of this poem was used on the backside of my fourteen-year old's headstone in 1985.
Year by year, one by one,
Fewer and fewer we become.
No one owns tomorrow
But we question what has been
And ponder the reasons why.
No one owns tomorrow -
We have no right
To take it for granted,
To think we'll be here
When a new dawn comes calling.
We've lived through yesterday,
Survived it, more or less.
But we can't change what has been;
If we could, you would still be with us.
Not waitinbg for us, watching from above.
No, no one owns tomorrow.
The future that's ahead
Can never be the same,
Never mean as much as once it would.
But no one owns tomorrow.
Spoken from your heart where the pain never really goes away. Sorry for the loss of your child at such a young and tender age, yet your words ring such truth. Live for today because we don't know what tomorrow will bring...
Yes no one owns tomorrow, not even tonight. "We have no right to take it for granted" and that's the line that wakes us up. Great incisive and reflective poem.
Note: Since my husband's cancer surgery 4/25/05, this book content has been integrated into the public speaking content for audiences interested in a sassy approach to personal and/or community awareness events. Another chapbook on intimate love poet
