As if to carve a headstone
their stark skeletal feet
scratch a way across
stone edges.
Eyes so black their darkness
sucks the day’s gray light
into madness
and the night.
A song. A moan. A monotone.
They trill a slow soft dirge
of “coo…caroo…caroo…¨
as winter’s wind sifts through
feathers
to blow snow puff
ashes into air.
With iridescent mauve and turquoise
shine, their necks bob back and forth
like metronomes
to mock my concentration
and mark away the minutes
