Been too long since I posted something. I wrote this one for my Mom on Mother's Day.
I see short grass ripple in the sun
like a million fingers, scratching
the back of an itchy breeze.
I see sparrows fight,
over a window perch
on the barn's shady side,
As they chase each other
in orbits more tangled than a cloud
of flies over a pile of manure.
I see long arms of trees
trying to greet each other, but
their hands never meet in the wind.
From the collapsed chicken coop,
I hear wanderlust gurgles of an unseen brook
through tangles of wood, wire, and grass.
I see clouds sliding like biscuits
across a blue plate as the grass
ripples in the breeze again.
This time like an invisible
knife, spreading excess
butter off the blade.

I really like the way you express your visual observatons and memories in metaphor and similie. It really puts the reader there. I'll bet your Mom really loved this piece and I'm sure it brought back memories for her. What a thoughtful gift for Mother's Day!

JUST LOVE THIS, Daniel! Has that good old "grandma" feel to it, as seen and experienced by the child... full of the wonderment and wisdom embodied by our strange and mysterious old grannys... kinda mystical, especially if she was a Mountain Lady! The imagery is so spot on and appealing - again, straight out of a child's mind that has had its belly stuffed with Grandma's home cooking. Can almost SMELL this! Thanks for stopping by my page and the mention of your name made me think of the early days of Podcast, when I seem to remember enjoying your recitals very much. No wonder! :)) TY Kate xx
Your wonderful poem brings back some terrific memories of my grandmothers on the farm. The air was clean and pure, a peacefulness settled over the land as the crop grew, and to this day I can still smell the strong coffee perking in the old coffee pot on the stove. Those were humble days, but the most memorable ones I've ever had.
