like a cruise ship idling through
a crop of velvet waves
munching on a cookie
as a chipmunk would
fat fingers fidgeting in front
of his mouth with every bite
sweeping away (he thinks) most crumbs
but a few always catch in his beard
the chair is small against his broad back
hidden in the part bulging over as he reclines
he pages through a magazine
propped spine up on his massive gut
his sneakers shift in the grit
his habits deposit on the floor
he sits both huge and quiet
like a cruise ship idling through
a crop of velvet waves
