Cuddling By Campfire with My Dog Gus
The fun in the sun has ended
As the sun begins to fall and close its eyes for the night
There is no more light in sight
The warmth of the sun has left us
The cool breeze begins to sneak upon us
I look over at my favorite friend,
My dog Gus
“Come Gus!”
“Come here boy!”
“Let’s snuggle by the fire and keep warm.”
Me,
My sister,
My mom and dad
All huddled by the fire
As Gus followed and sat by my side
As he pressed his warm body next to me
As I quickly began to feel a million degrees warmer
We all were silent as we stared at the tall, orange glow of the fire
And listened the crinkles and pops from the wood
As the fire began to soar
And the winds began to roar
Noises from nowhere began to come from every direction
Chills traveled down my spine
And the fear of the unknown,
Creped upon my soul
As the walls of my home were far from here
Gus began to press harder against me
As he detected,
The fears of the wild have taken over my soul
He jumped on my lap
And stared into my eyes
As he tried to calm me
By telling me in his own, way that everything was going to be all right
Mom asked, “Are you OK?”
I looked at Gus
In my mind, I knew if Gus could camp here tonight
Then so could I
As I looked up at mom
I said, “I’m fine mom. I have Gus here to protect me!”
Mom smiled and gave each of us a stick
“Why don’t we roast some marshmallows?”
We got out the marshmallows
As we,
All pressed closer and closer to the narrow flame
The warmth of the flame
Kept us warm and toasty
As we began to roast some marshmallows
Dad began to play some tunes,
As we sang to the music’s melody
Happiness filled the air
Not a care in the world to bear
Time was of the essence
And any fear that was flowing through my soul
No longer existed
As I enjoyed this magical moment we shared
Realizing that the bond between one family can fight any fear or obstacle that comes our way
As time went on
The fire began to dwindle
As my eyes became heavy
And my head pressed against Gus
A moment I will cherish
A memory I will treasure in my heart forever…

This reminds me of my precious dog Blackie. He seems to sense if I'm sad or depressed. He'll come to me with those sweet little eyes and look up at me. Enjoyed this!
Many blessings,
