We topped the cliffs of Dover,
When we saw them in the sky,
We could not believe their number,
And they were more than twice our size,

Their speed could leave us standing,
And their weapons so advanced,
Not one of us pilots,
Thought we even stood a chance,

But we knew the world was waiting,
And the coin of fate been tossed,
The whole world would be forfeit,
If this battle should be lost,

We had no idea where they came from,
Where-ever it could be,
But where-ever they called home,
Was outside this galaxy,

The ground control gave orders,
That the battle was to start,
Every eye was wide,
And beating fast was every heart,

Scud rockets, Cruise and Tomahawks,
Were fired from the ground,
But they never reached their targets,
They were destroyed still inward bound.

By Laser beams and Pulse waves,
And force fields, we couldn’t see,
Yet they did not return our fire,
Though they could have, easily.

They just sat there in their spaceships,
Completely motionless,
Whatever they were waiting for,
Was anybody’s guess.

Then suddenly, each of the crafts,
Gave out a high pitched sound,
And almost as if we were remote controlled,
We descended to the ground.

Not descending as in falling,
But as though they brought us down,
Not one of our pilots crashed,
As they settled on the ground.

Our communications network,
No longer seemed to work,
And though our weapons all malfunctioned,
Not a single man was hurt.

Though they could have slaughtered all of us,
In the blinking of an eye,
They didn’t, they remained there,
Just hovering in the sky.

No-one could understand it,
But then quite suddenly,
The largest of the mother ships,
Descended silently.

Within a mile of the command post,
Where our leaders were concealed,
As though they already knew their whereabouts,
On this epic battlefield.

It was clear that we were beaten,
Our weapons were as toys,
Our strategies were useless,
That did no more than annoy.

Our leaders as though by mind control,
Were summoned to their foe,
What transpired then in that mother ship,
Nobody else would know.

But in time our leaders left it,
Unharmed but quite subdued,
And commanded all our forces,
To stand down and not renew,

Hostilities of any kind,
But return back to their base,
For this had been a warning,
To the entire human race.

That we were heading toward destruction,
With our wars and nuclear bombs,
That would have massive repercussions,
Through the stars and well beyond.

To other sola systems,
And far flung galaxies,
Which would not just mean the end of man,
And all humanity.

But an endless chain reaction,
Would destroy their world as well,
And however many planets,
In between no-one could tell.

Our leaders made it sound as though
It was all their own idea,
To disarm their nuclear weapons,
Over the next ten years.

Though I have my own opinions
Of where that idea came from,
Because no sooner had they said it,
Than the alien fleet was gone.

I really like this poem because it is more realistic than the "Star Wars," mentality of our military and even renowned astrophysicists like Stephen Hawking. But, I guess our propensity to believe that there is a threat from vampires and zombies, along with other creatures of our imagination, is largely the result of media ratings and the basic need to think we are better off than our neighbors.
