prompt was "spontaneous combustion"...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ashes
Acrid, stale--
no burning left
beyond this soreness
at the back of the throat, open--
open-wide and staring, eyes
blinded as
the sun burst
within.
And again,
A chasm grabs greedily at
All that remains...
Ashes
Acrid, stale -- yet,
burning somewhere,
signs of life?
And I?
I,  no longer who I once was,
stand, agape and sore,
worn, weary and knowing
that from this chasm,
I must rise.
Then, a moment, gone!
Fled, forever...
Once again, quiet.
And so very still.
Sorrow and stillness.
Dry tears and wonder.
Sorrow,
Strength
And ashes.
Ashes
To Ashes?
Once again, swallowed whole
spun back, spewed, spit out,
burnt and cold,
dry, acrid, agape--  yet,
we rise --
Nothing left of who we were...
Yet we rise.
Together!
One spontaneous roll of thunder,
climbing, trodding,
treading wearily
this razed and trembling earth--
Treading a miracle,
ugly, burdensome miracle --
And  from this chasm,  yet again,
We rise.
Driven by myth,
yet again, yet again...
we rise.
That's it! Driven by myth - because we feel we're supposed to keep at it even though all that's left is the ashes. Oooooo - I adore your work!
