Darcy Morgan - in short segments of poetry and prose.

(Darcy is homeless and has been living rough. Up to this point she was sleeping on the beach under a boat, but fate intervened and she lost her shelter)
It's much better to read her past history, than for me to try to condense it into one paragraph

Part 28

Dawn crept across the chill pavement, arriving at the feet of a very cold and damp Darcy. The night dew had saturated her blanket and her hair hung in bedraggled curls. She lifted her head from her knees, squinting in the grey light, then peeled her blanket from her legs and carefully stood up. Her legs and feet ached from sitting scrunched up for so long.  Slowly, Darcy made her way to the station. She had to dry off and make herself presentable somehow.

Reflection tells a tale of woe

Hardship of the night betrayed

Sallow skin pinched into life

Towel-dried hair and efforts made

Digging deep through meagre pot

To find the best of what she’s got

Trembling hands smooth stubborn folds

Of crumpled skirt o’er long, lean hips

Smart sweater kept for special cause

Needs final touch of soft red lips

Conscious of deficiencies

Rough living means no luxuries

Finally Darcy was done. She looked into the small washroom mirror one last time. Her clothes could have done with ironing but, since there was no chance of that, they would just have to do.  Now she needed to beg some loose change and see if the market had any cheap lipstick. It wasn’t something she normally wore but, if she had any chance at all of getting off the streets and into a place where she could make some money, she should take it.  And, for that, she needed to look the part.

Slick of colour marks her mood

Tenacity, her wilful stance

Inner turmoil held in check

She’s stepping up to take her chance

Arrival finds resolve restrained

But, nothing ventured, nothing gained

Darcy stopped at the chipped green door and glanced at the windows. The street entrance was yet another cafe. This one specialising in vegetarian food. The place was clearly popular, it was packed out with all kinds of people, laughing and chattering, as they tucked into delicious looking dishes, served by a harassed looking woman in a bright orange sarong and purple t-shirt.

Darcy watched for a few moments and the woman caught her eye and smiled. Darcy was instantly more at ease. She took a deep breath and knocked on the side door.

The proverbial glimmer of hope, this must one day become a book (or movie?) but then the art/poetry in it would be cast aside, heaven forbid! M.True

Another segment rich is your style of combining modalities. Thank you.

I agree with Jerry. Through it all, Darcy seems to have purpose in her life, regardless of circumstances working against her. It's that kind of resolve that always helps people overcome tough times.

Darcy has something within herself that most of us wish we had. Self determination and a will to succeed. Unlike so many in her position, she does not give up, but continues to fight the good fight.
