A Wish Comes True

Rated "G" by the Author.

A very short short story I wrote back in 1993.

Copyright Christian L. Berger 1993

She was in her mid thirties, an attractive woman who was happily married for ten years. She was as much in love with her husband now as she was when they first married.
They couldn’t have children. It was her. She knew it was, and it tore her up inside knowing that she couldn’t give him a child.
One hot summer’s day while laying on the sofa her husband was out front, washing the car. She was watching him from the living room window. Her mind was filled with thoughts of their future together.
The midday sun was especially hot that day and she became drowsy. Her eyes were half shut as she dreamily gazed out the window. Her ears were filled with the droning sound of a fly, buzzing back and forth along the window ceil. Her sensations became distorted and the window began to shrink. Or was it the fly that was growing larger?
To her surprise the fly flew to her side and asked her a question: "I've been watching you. And I know that you’re unhappy. I will grant you a wish. Tell me what you want, and I'll give it to you".
Being unselfish, and thinking only of her husband, it didn’t take her long to say, "I want what my husband wants. I want him to be happy. My wish is that you grant his".
Now the fly looked at the woman in sorrow and said, "Are you sure this is what you want? I can make you pregnant with child. I could bring joy and happiness to your life."
With loving devotion to her husband, she answered back, "I will only be happy if my husband is happy. He has been troubled lately, I know. Grant him his greatest wish and we will both be happy."
The fly quickly shrank back to his normal size as he flew back to the window buzzing about as before. He hollered back at her in a weak and shrill voice," It is done. His wish is granted!"
Just then the car started up outside and woke her from her slumber. She rose from the sofa rubbing her eyes.
“What a strange dream”, she thought.
She went towards the window only to see her husband driving away. She had a strange feeling that something was wrong. She called out to him. He never looked back. She screamed in pain and threw her fist through the screen in the window. Some blood trickled down her arm but she didn’t notice it.
The fly on the window flew out the hole that her fist left behind. He buzzed away into the sunshine and warm breezes of that hot summer’s day and the woman never saw her husband again.

Great imaginative write. Readers often love to be stunned. Such an impact might just make readers fine-tune their next spousal/partner 'communication.' Thank you. ~~ Diana

Short but powerful in the effect it has on the reader. Thank you for sharing, Christian. Welcome to AD. Love and peace to you,

I love surprise endings! I guess it's true when people say, 'Be careful what you wish for.'

This is the best piece in its genre that I have read in a long time. A good story (vignette) well written. Can't ask for more than that.
