Twinkle, Twinkle Back and Forth
a fantasy parable for children about grief
Did you know that whenever we feel love coming from inside of us we give off light? We do, and the stronger and purer the love, the brighter the light. Now, we can’t feel that kind of great love all the time, and sometimes we don’t feel much love at all, so our lights flicker. From the sky, we look like stars that are twinkling.
Often in our lives, something that is alive that we love will die, and we feel sad, maybe even mad. That’s natural and good. That’s a way of feeling love. Whenever a living thing dies its spirit becomes a seed up in the land of the sky, and whenever we feel love for the living thing that has died, our love flies up to nourish the seed so it will sprout and grow.
Even if we feel angry and think things like, “How could you leave me?” or “Why didn’t you take your medicine and take better care of yourself?”, sometimes even if we think things like, “I hate you for taking that foolish chance,” so long as our thoughts and feelings, even the angry ones, contain love, they feed the seeds in the sky of those whom we’ve loved and lost.
Now, when those seeds sprout and grow, they become saplings, then grow into tall, strong trees that begin to blossom and bear the fruit of pure love, which gives off wondrous light. We see the light here on earth from those mighty tree stars, and we call the light starlight.
Wonderfully refreshing breezes always blow up by the stars in the skies, that are really shining trees, making their limbs and branches move back and forth. This makes their light shake a little, and that’s why we say that the stars twinkle. Just like, to the stars, we look like we’re twinkling.
