The true story of a 14 year-old in Germany during WWII and her fight to survive in the BDM.
Gerti lives in a small village in the northern part of the Black Forest. Her world changes as politics becomes part of her educational process, including joining the BDM (the female branch of the Hitler Youth) where she is required to attend meetings, work in service and training including heavy manual labor at a farm camp, Nanny to an officer's family, and even working in a factory.
Eventually she makes it to Berlin where she watches the devastation of Berlin fall during the last years of the war.
This novel helps answer the question of how Hitler was able to take control of the country. He did it by taking control of the children.
I love true stories like this. I have to assume that you got close to Gerti, perhaps by interviews in order to write this memoir of her time in World War II.
