This is the 11th installation in a series.

Monday, 10 a.m.

David had grown fond
Of his daily talks with Linda
The woman who had slipped
Him her number in the restaurant
On that fateful day.

The day before Julia
Started coming
To the restaurant daily
To see �her man�.

Even though he had known her
For three months now
He still hadn�t asked her
The question�

To become his girlfriend--

And now it was time to end it.

Uncle Serg had said that
He was pleased with him;
That he had a good work ethic;
That he�d make a good chef.

He even had said that he hoped
He would stay on
After his schooling was over.

But David was wise enough to see
That Uncle Serg was also loyal to Julia
And that staying on
Also meant
Joining the family

Permanently.

So, as he sat in his cubicle
He weighed his options�

He looked around
And realized that
He had done nothing
To personalize his space.

It was as empty and cold
As the day he moved into it
Four years ago--
Save for the work papers
That lay neatly on his desk�

Now, it was 12:30,
And David had an idea.

He went to his boss� office
And found him quietly working through lunch.

Tom, he said.
Got a minute?

Tom nodded and smiled.
David explained that there was
A position in the manufacturing division
That he�d seen on the company postings,

And that he wanted to apply
For that job.
He asked Tom what he thought.

I�ve heard good things about
That manager, Tom replied.
And the job is some cost accounting
Along with other plant activities

It just might be a good change
Of pace for you�
You know it�s at the manufacturing plant though, he continued
You�ll have to drive to get there

David smiled.
That�s exactly what I want, Tom
A new environment.
If I apply, do you think you could
Give me a good recommendation?

Of course, Tom replied.

That was just what David
Wanted to hear.
If it doesn�t work out Tom, David replied
Do you think I could take on more
Responsibility here?

I don�t see why not, Dave.
I�d be happy to help you
Move your career along.
Tom smiled graciously.

David did too.
Tom had always been a good manager�
Very fair with his employees
And very interested in their development.

Thanks, he said.
I�ll apply for the manufacturing thing right now
And forward the application to you
To approve before the end of the day

No problem Dave,
I�m leaving at 4:30�

Got it.

Dave returned to his desk
And quickly completed the application for the job posting
He emailed it to Tom
Then he opted to go out for lunch.

And while he was out
He picked up a few knick knacks
To personalize his cubicle�

When he returned to the office
He carefully placed his new
Baubles in his cubicle,
Then signed into email�

Tom had approved the application,
And the hiring manager had
Sent him an invite for an interview
Later in the week�

David knew what had happened�

Tom had not only approved the application,
But he had made a few calls�

And David felt very lucky
That he hadn�t abandoned
His cubicle too soon�

There was an email from Linda
He opened it and smiled
She was always sending him a humorous story
Or a pleasant thought.

He wrote her back,
And asked if she was interested
In dinner tonight--

That was a bold move
For him
Since all he�d ever dared to do
Was ask her out for a drink

Julia and her past had kind of rattled him
So he had thought it was better to play it safe�

She responded instantly
�Yes. Where do you want to meet?�

He asked her to come to his office.
Another bold move�
He had never allowed Julia to set foot
In his company
For obvious reasons�
